Euro 2020 15.06 – Tuesday

As always, we expect Bitcoin Betting to be popular on Tuesday, even though there are just two games. Below, we will make predictions on those games. First, we have Hungary facing off against the holding champions. Portugal won the last edition of the European Championship and they will look to start this one with a win. Hungary, on the other hand, will do their best to try and stop Ronaldo and his team mates. Last but not least, we have France playing against Germany. Les Bleus are favorites to win Euro 2020 and they will get a chance to prove how strong they are against a nation that’s just as good as them. Hungary vs Portugal

Qualification for the 2016 edition of the European Championships ended a 30-year wait to appear at a major tournament for Hungary, therefore securing consecutive appearances in this competition is already a success in itself. It’s a baptism of fire though as they take on reigning champions Portugal – a country they’ve never beaten in 13 attempts (D4, L9). Furthermore, they’ve failed to score in five of their last six meetings against the Iberian nation. Whilst underdogs in this one, Hungary can at least take comfort from their recent form which has seen them avoid defeat in 11 matches (W7, D4). They’ve also scored at least one goal before HT in four of their last five matches during that run, but interestingly, have netted only two of their 11 goals in European Championships during the first half (seven in the second half, two in extra-time).

Portugal are bidding to follow in the footsteps of neighbors Spain to become just the second team to win back-to-back European Championships. History suggests they should navigate the group stage easily enough given the fact they’ve progressed into the knockout phase in all seven of their Euro appearances, yet despite this, it’s worth noting that they’ve failed to win each of their last five major tournament openers (D3, L2). Since November 2019, only one team has managed to defeat Fernando Santos’ side, so confidence should be high for the holders (W10, D4, L1). Four of the last five games in that sequence further saw the opening goal scored in the first half – three for and one against. The holding champions didn’t look as powerful as they should in the preparations for this tournament. However, that will mean nothing, once their first official game starts.

Prediction

A Selecao have a strong overall record in this competition, reaching the semi-finals in 1984, 2000 and 2012, while they were present in the quarter-finals of Euro 1996 and Euro 2008. Portugal were also runners-up on home soil at Euro 2004 and are fancied to advance deep into this year’s tournament. Santos’s side will bring a six-game unbeaten run into this match, meanwhile, and they drew 0-0 with Spain before thumping Israel 4-0 in their two friendlies earlier this month. Hungary’s preparations for Euro 2020 were also solid, as they recorded a 1-0 win over Cyprus earlier this month before playing out a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland. The strength of this section means that it is going to be a very tough task to finish in the top three positions.

Hungary held Portugal to a draw when they locked horns at Euro 2016, and Santos’s side are unlikely to have it all their own way on Tuesday. The holders need to get off to a strong start, though, and we fancy Ronaldo to inspire his side to an important victory over the Hungarians. With that in mind, we are backing an Away Side Victory @ 1.48 odds.

France vs Germany

After a bitter runners-up finish at Euro 2016, reigning world champions France come into this competition as serious candidates to win Euro 2020 as they attempt to become the first side to be world and European champions at the same time on two occasions. ‘Les Bleus’ are known to be strong starters in European Championships. They have lost just one of their nine opening games of the tournament (W5, D3), with that single loss dating back to 1960! Although this game is in Munich, France’s confidence should be high as they’re unbeaten in five H2Hs on German soil (W3, D2). The world’s number two ranked nation are also enjoying a run of four consecutive wins ‘to nil’, and notably, a fifth successive shutout would mark their longest run without conceding since June 2008.

Reaching at least the semi-final stage in all international competitions between 2006 and 2016, Germany (#12) were humbled at the 2018 World Cup, finishing last in their group. Three-time Euro winners, the Germans may have never lost an opening game in this competition (W7, D5). However, they’re now winless in 11 international matches against nations that have a better FIFA rank than them (D7, L4). This will be Joachim Löw’s last tournament in charge of the German national team who were humiliated 6-0 by Spain in November, and in March lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia (#62). The H2H history makes for worrying reading too, as the ‘Mannschaft’ are winless in five meetings with France (D2, L3) – including a semi-final defeat in Euro 2016 – with four of those featuring a 1-0 HT scoreline either way.

Prediction

The less said about Germany’s futile attempts at Russia 2018 the better, but a new tournament brings with it new opportunities for the ever-hopeful Mannschaft, who will step foot onto the field for a record-breaking 50th time at a European Championship on Tuesday night. Germany also boast a 12-game unbeaten record during their opening games of the Euros, but it was France who ended their dreams of glory five years ago, as a brace from Griezmann saw Les Bleus dump their rivals out in the semi-finals, and Die Mannschaft are winless in their last five encounters with the reigning world champions

The attacking power at Germany’s disposal makes a France clean sheet seem somewhat incomprehensible, but Deschamps’s men have the defensive tools needed to shut up shop against any opposition in Europe. This mouthwatering tie could very well be settled by a moment of magic from the likes of Mbappe or Benzema. Also, Germany are not exactly the force they once were, so we believe Les Bleus can the spoils by the narrowest of margins. However, that’s a very risky bet that doesn’t offer enough value. For that reason, we are backing an Under 2.25 Goals outcome @ 2.05 odds.
